Today we went over to Bryant University for the annual Chinese New Year Celebration. This is a wonderful event that celebrates the rich Chinese culture and the Chinese community in Rhode Island. There were some great displays of dancing, martial arts and singing. We had so much fun.

Something I noticed was that I was starting to pick up on what people were saying, just a word or two here and there but it was cool. Here are some photos from the event.

Chinese Dancers
These little girls were amazing. So poised and focused.

Swordplay
Students exhibit incredible skills with swords at Bryant’s Chinese New Year Celebration.

Bamboo Tree Dancers
The Bamboo Tree Dancers were so graceful at Bryant’s Chinese New Year Celebration

Dance: Pretty Girls
This was titled Dance: Pretty Girls (Sichuan Opera). The dancers were part of Art Troupe of the High School Affiliated with the Renmin University of China (RDFZ).

I was a few days behind again and so I listened to 23 minutes of Rapid Mandarin Chinese and 22 minutes of Chinese Through Tone and Color.

Chinese New Year Twilight Parade - Sydney

As I continue to listen to and speak the words of Chinese Through Tone and Color I am becoming more confident in being able to understand the symbols and also to speak. I’m not quite in a place where I could have a conversation but I could try. I can’t wait for Saturday or Sunday to go to Bryant University for the Chinese New Year Festival.

Chinese Celebrate The Year Of Ox

Okay so working on learning Chinese for 15 minutes a day isn’t as easy as I thought. I missed a day and then two and then three and so today I listened to Rapid Mandarin Chinese for an hour today. It was good to hear that again. Repetition is the key to learning however when I do this only for 15 minutes a day I don’t get much repetition time. I am back on track and will continue to learn more from Chinese Through Tone and Color, that is one of the better books I have so far.

I am looking forward to this Saturday when we go to Bryant University for the Chinese New Year celebration. This should be really fun.
